The official Forest Service directory confirms, among others, the current contacts for the White River, Arapaho–Roosevelt, Medicine Bow–Routt, GMUG, Pike–San Isabel, Rio Grande, and San Juan units.

A few names in the earlier list require clarification:

Taylor Park is generally treated as a ranger station or administrative area associated with the Gunnison Ranger District rather than a separate current district, and the Medicine Bow–Routt district offices in Colorado are Hahns Peak/Bears Ears, Parks, and Yampa.

The USFS can help with the Forest Service surface-land side of a mining claim, but the BLM is the primary agency for federal mining-claim records and mineral status. The Forest Service manages the surface resources—such as vegetation, wildlife, roads, water, and recreational access—while the BLM administers the federal mineral estate and claim filings.

Contact the ranger district that manages the location. The USFS may help you determine:

Whether the parcel is actually National Forest System land.
Whether it contains private or “inholding” property.
Whether the area is withdrawn or closed to prospecting, such as wilderness, acquired mineral land, or a mineral withdrawal area.
Whether a mine or claimant has an approved Notice of Intent or Plan of Operations.
Whether proposed activity requires a permit, operating plan, reclamation bond, or other authorization.
Whether there are Forest Service closures, safety restrictions, roads, gates, or access limitations.
Which local rules apply to rockhounding, panning, digging, motorized equipment, or suction dredging.
